SPY Fox 2: "Some Assembly Required" is a kid's adventure game for the Windows and Macintosh operating systems. It was developed by Humongous Entertainment and first released in 1998 in Australia. It was released in North America in 1999. In 2006, it was redistributed as a digital download on GameTap's website.

"Some Assembly Required" is the second game in the SPY Fox series and is a sequel to SPY Fox in "Dry Cereal". The game follows SPY Fox as he attempts to stop LeRoach from destroying the World's Fair.

Plot[]

The freedom of the world is once again in peril as the SPY Corps must call on their trusty envoy, SPY Fox to neutralize a plot engineered by the Society of Meaningless Evil, Larceny, Lying and Yelling (S.M.E.L.L.Y.).

The Giant Evil Dogbot, a villainous weapon, is masquerading as a statue at the World's Fair. The Dogbot's collar cleverly holds the Chateau LeRoach, a revolving restaurant where SPY Fox will find Napoleon LeRoach, mastermind of a plan for revenge, dining. LeRoach has held a grudge against the population of the world for a long time, ever since he was denied entry to the World's Fair because of his insufficient height (he was a child at the time, as shown in the cutscene in the beginning). With the entry of each fairgoer, the turnstile winds-up the Giant Evil Dogbot's gears. SPY Fox needs to track down the activation code and OFF switch. Then, before the millionth customer moves through the turnstile, SPY Fox needs to slip through the Achilles' heel of the evil Dogbot by sneaking past the breath analyzer to install the OFF switch and set the activation code. Having done so, he must then activate the OFF switch and if possible, get to the bonus ending where he can trick LeRoach into entering prison through its sewer pipes.

To get into Chateau LeRoach, SPY Fox must use the correct ID to sneak past the friendly, yet not so intelligent guard of the restaurant. Luckily, SPY Corps Mobile Command has Professor Quack's latest invention: a false ID maker. SPY Fox can insert a tweaked picture of him into the ID maker and print out an ID to show to the guard. Finally, SPY Fox can meet up with LeRoach. LeRoach (after explaining his evil plot to SPY Fox in nauseating detail) will trap SPY Fox in the mouth of the Dogbot. Using the right gears, SPY Fox can easily unwind the Dogbot's tooth that is blocking the ladder down. After a quick message from Monkey Penny, SPY Fox must then locate where the OFF switch is, (cleverly hidden somewhere in the World's Fair) find the OFF code and a way to get in. Depending on the game path, SPY Fox will use a variety of gadgets to locate each of these things.

Gameplay[]

Basic gameplay involves simply clicking on things to have SPY Fox interact with the world. The player advances by solving puzzles, talking with people and obtaining the required item to move forward. There are also an array of gadgets provided by Professor Quack that can help SPY Fox on his way, some of which include SPY Skates, The SPY Key Replicator and The Alarm Deactivator.

Paths/Storylines[]

This game only has two possible paths (Flytrap and Regenerator) and thus two possible "game setups." These are the lowest numbers of any Junior Adventure.

Storyline differences[]

  • In the Flytrap storyline, the trophy on the top right is referred to as the 1981 Silver Cup, but in the Regenerator storyline, it is referred to as the 1984 Woolly Mammoth Award.
  • The SPY Heat only appears in the Flytrap storyline, not in the Regenerator storyline.
  • The Caped Cod stays by himself, smiling in the Flytrap storyline, but in the Regenerator storyline, he immediately leaves with Elmo.
  • In the Flytrap storyline, Chef Dinah has an onion, a pickle, and a pineapple, but in the Regenerator storyline, Granny Smith sells them on sticks.
  • In the Ice Rink in the Flytrap storyline, Victor throws roses, but in the Regenerator storyline, he sweeps floors and SPY Fox must look inside a trophy while Victor is distracted for a while.
  • In the Flytrap storyline, Cooper looks at a thermometer, but in the Regenerator storyline, he looks at a security camera, but it needs a Wax Museum postcard in order for SPY Fox to enter.
  • In the Regenerator storyline, Cooper stays here, but in the Flytrap storyline, he leaves immediately to call the Air Conditioning Repair place while the temperature goes over 80 degrees.
  • Enrico Cowruso only appears in the Regenerator storyline, but in the Flytrap storyline, he's absent and Wolfgang Duck, with a chef's uniform that you need appears to the right of Burt Barracuda instead.
  • In the Food of the Future Exhibit in the Regenerator storyline, Granny Smith sells onions, pickles, and pineapples on sticks while Elmo is in it, but in the Flytrap storyline, she sells candied apples on sticks while Elmo is absent, but Lenny appears in it instead.
  • Outside Wee World in the Flytrap storyline, the building has keys, but in the Regenerator storyline, it has a sign with a lever that the security guard can't stand in front of.
  • Inside Wee World in the Flytrap storyline, nothing is featured in it, but in the Regenerator storyline, it features three or four flashing colors, with a freight elevator used by SPY Fox to enter the flashing color code which is the same as in Wee World's danger zone and deactivate the alarm with two clips to attach before the time is up.
  • In the Regenerator storyline, Virgil has postcards, but in the Flytrap storyline, he has nothing.
  • At the center of town in the Regenerator storyline, there is a Science: The Movie room, but in the Flytrap storyline, there are dinosaur statues.
  • In the Regenerator storyline, it is only important for SPY Fox to use Elmo's happy-faced talk balloon on the Caped Cod, not the Caped Cod's sad-faced talk balloon on Elmo. Otherwise, the Caped Cod's happy-faced talk balloon will be skipped.
  • In the Flytrap storyline, it is only important for SPY Fox to use the Madame Ladybug's talk balloon on Victor, not talk to him about the roses by clicking on them. Otherwise, Madame Ladybug's talk balloon will be skipped.
  • There are differences in the fan part of the Regenerator storyline:
    • When the fan blows the air up, it goes counter-clockwise and the propeller next to the machine goes clockwise.
    • When the fan sucks the air down, it goes clockwise and the propeller next to the machine goes counter-clockwise.
    • The windsocks stay down when the fan is off.
  • In the Flytrap storyline, the Dogbot has a flytrap room and a conveyor belt control room, but in the Regenerator storyline, it features pictures of LeRoach instead.
  • In the Flytrap storyline, SPY Fox doesn't need a candy apple until he visits Plant World, exits it for the first time, and goes near the Food of the Future exhibit.
  • In the Regenerator storyline, SPY Fox doesn't need to find a rebus in a certain trophy until he visits the Wax Museum and exits it for the first time.
  • In the Regenerator storyline, SPY Fox doesn't need a pickle, a pineapple, nor an onion from the Food of the Future exhibit until he talks to Chef Dinah after the pickle pot pie, pineapple right-side-up cake, or onion delight talk balloon is on her.
  • In all storylines, SPY Fox doesn't need to find Walter Wireless until three missing gears are put in place.

Trivia[]

  • Doll and Lee are based on a late sheep that was cloned in real life named Dolly named after Dolly Parton.
  • S.M.E.L.L.Y. is a spoof of the villainous organization S.P.E.C.T.R.E. in the James Bond series.
  • Near the end, LeRoach dances to the circus music from Arthur (1996-2022) while confetti and balloons rain down.
  • If the villain Napoleon LeRoach is defeated, the certificate is stamped with the wax seal of excellence. If not, it's just stamped with the stamp of approval.
  • The French, Dutch, German, and Italian dubs of the demo include the Wee World sign and the arrows leading to the Souvenir Stand, but the US and UK dubs of that don't include them.

Goofs[]

  • When the flamingo does the triple greasy axle, the single snow boot is done by SPY Fox just like the pig.
  • When the pig does the single snow boot, the triple greasy axle is done by SPY Fox just like the flamingo.
  • In the Flytrap storyline, the single snow boot and triple greasy axle ice skating moves are switched around, but the double sour cow is the only ice skating move that stays in its place.
  • When Bea Bear tells SPY Fox about the required ice skating move, she says that the move is illustrated in the latest edition of the bi-monthly magazine, Skaters Weekly. This doesn't make sense as weekly means once a week and bi-monthly means once every two months or twice every month.
  • When SPY Fox says, "Apple, Cherry, Grape", "Cherry, Apple, Orange", and "Cherry, Pineapple, Orange", his pocket has the activation code which is "Pineapple, Grape, Orange".
