Pajama Sam in "No Need To Hide When It's Dark Outside" is a "point-and-click" adventure game in the Pajama Sam series developed by Humongous Entertainment for the Windows and Macintosh operating systems in 1996. Since then, the game has been re-released several times. In 2008, it was repackaged by Atari and Majesco Entertainment as Pajama Sam: Don't Fear the Dark and released for the Nintendo Wii.
When initially released in 1996, the game was priced at US $49.95. It was significant because this is the first Humongous Entertainment game to have changing game paths. Most Humongous games made after this would feature changing game paths, increasing its replayability. (Games prior to this usually had some sort of variation each time the game was played, such as different letters and locations in Fatty Bear's Birthday Surprise, different bottle locations in Freddi Fish and the Case of the Missing Kelp Seeds, etc.) It was also the first Humongous game to experiment with lip-sync in character animation, most prominent in cut scenes, as in other shots (such as in a typical clickpoint/walk-through screen) there is no lip sync when characters speak (similar to previous Humongous games).
Plot[]
One night, while reading the first issue of Pajama Man, Sam's mom enters his room (but is not seen by the player) reminding him that tonight is the night he sleeps with the lights out. Sam feels confident having his Pajama Sam mask just in case. After saying goodnight, Sam's mom turns off the light and closes the door. Sam tries to reassure himself, but the dark bedroom looks pretty creepy. Boldly, Sam transforms himself into Pajama Sam and decides to confront and capture Darkness, but first he must find his Pajama Sam gear: his Pajama Sam Mask, his signature-edition all-metal Pajama Man Lunchbox/Portable Bad Guy Containment Unit, and his Illuminator Mark V Jr. Flashlight.
After finding all three items, he enters the closet, but the door closes behind him, then he falls into the Land of Darkness and lands on a giant baseball glove. After crossing a bridge, Sam is caught in a trap by several trees acting as custom guards. After taking his stuff away, the trees allow him to enter. Sam must then retrieve his three belongings before confronting Darkness. He goes on a quest: spanning a river, exploring a lava-filled mine, and both as well as in Darkness' house.
When Sam has retrieved his gear, he enters Darkness' closet and faces him. After Sam explains what he is going to do, Darkness asks why Sam would be afraid of him if he is the one who will be contained in the box. Sam, seeing that Darkness has no friends of his own, agrees to play a game of cheese and crackers with him. After winning a game, Sam tells Darkness that he should get home before his mom gets worried. They agree to play again tomorrow night. After jumping into his bed and saying goodnight to Darkness, who joins him, the credits roll as Sam drifts off to sleep.
Gameplay[]
Pajama Sam 1 features gameplay similar to the other Humongous games. It is played almost entirely with the mouse, using a left click to interact with the environment. Sam has an inventory which can be accessed at any time by hovering the mouse at the bottom of the screen. The save screen can be entered by pressing the S
key and the load screen the L
key. The Spacebar
pauses the game, allowing several game options. The game is quit by either an option in the pause menu or pressing the stop sign.
Throughout the game's course, players are challenged with solving puzzles and interacting with characters. Puzzles are solved by using items to manipulate something in the environment. These items are usually found scattered around the game world or are obtained for other characters. All items are accessible through the inventory mentioned above and all have a purpose during the game.
Socks are collected as part of a large, optional "scavenger hunt". While in the land of darkness, Sam is encouraged to find and collect ten pairs of socks that have been thrown about. When each sock is discovered, the player is taken to the laundry room and places the sock in a laundry bin. After all ten socks are found, a "special animation" plays when the player re-enters the laundry room. This room can be accessed any time by clicking on the laundry basket icon in the right corner of the inventory.

Paths/Storylines[]
The number of possible games is pretty easy to calculate. Each of Sam's things can have two possible locations:
- Lunchbox: Can be underwater or in Darkness's garden.
- Flashlight: Can be in the abandoned shack or abandoned mine shaft.
- Mask: Can be in Darkness's garden on Carrot or in Darkness's living room.
There are six possible paths. The total number of possible games is 2*2*2 = 8. This does not include the locations of socks, the color of the flowers in the garden, the reading on the water meter in the Mines, the questions on the Brain Tickler, or anything else that isn't a straightforward "game path."
If the flashlight were in the shack, the mask in the garden, and the lunchbox by the well, and the Doors of Knowledge asked the player for the color of the flowers on the other side of the river, one could beat the game without ever oiling King or exploring the Mines. Otherwise, the Mines are extremely crucial to the plot, being the location of the flashlight, the location of an item required to obtain the mask, and necessary to pass through to obtain an item required for both the mask and lunchbox.
Trivia[]
- Cheese is a reoccurring element in Pajama Sam. It is mentioned by many characters and found in many places.
- This was the second Humongous game to feature a revamped "HE!" logo (the first being Freddi Fish 2: The Case of the Haunted Schoolhouse) design that was featured on all Humongous releases from 1996-2001, followed by Junior Adventures had an additional "It's a JUNIOR ADVENTURE!" screen appearing after the Humongous logo.
- This episode marks the first time to use lip sync animation, most notably in the cutscenes.
- An easter egg in the game when players click on one of the books in darkness' library, Sam will read a line from the Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll for the classic children's book "Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There" which is fitting for the game considering both Alice and Sam both venture into strange lands with odd logic governing them and meet a cast of odd characters. Even Sam's entry into the land of Darkness seems quite similar to Alice falling down the rabbit hole into wonderland.
- When Sam finds a log, he almost eventually exposes his head like an ostrich.
- When Sam uses 'dangerous' objects on objects or characters (like the pickaxe or hammer), he will say it won't be friendly because he might hurt the characters or break the objects.
- The music when Sam enters the kitchen has a striking resemblance to the opening of "Stray Cat Strut" by The Stray Cats (Kitchen music here).
- When Sam has all three of his items, he says, "I sure could use a cheese sandwich right about now." in the demo, but in the real game, he says, "I better get going." instead.
- Sam says, "I sure could use a cheese sandwich right about now." when he has none of his items in the real game, but in the demo, he says it all the time.
- In the real game, when Sam has one or two of his items, he says, "I wonder where those trees hid my Pajama Sam gear.".
- In the demo, Otto immediately leaves Sam behind on the dock, but in the real game, he can take him anywhere he wants.
- The magnet appears and is of important use in the underwater lunchbox and the Darkness' living room mask paths.
- The hammer appears and is of important use in the abandoned mine shaft flashlight and the Darkness' living room mask paths.
- When Sam is dressed up and ready to capture Darkness, he says, "All right. I'm ready." in the real game, but in the demo, he says, "Bye bye, now." instead, just to sign off.
- Before Sam says, "It's twelve forty-five.", his way of saying "According to this clock…" sounds different.
- Before Sam says other times, except twelve forty-five, his way of saying "According to this clock…" sounds the same.
- After Otto says, "I'm doing it. I'm floating!", he says, "Yahoo!" after Sam talks to him, but after refusing to talk to him, he says, "Oh, yahoo!".
- After Sam talks to King, King says, "Ooh, ooh, yeah!", but after Sam refuses to talk to King, King says, "Yeah!".
- After Sam talks to King or Sam does not talk to King, King's ways of saying, "Banzai!", "Whee!", and "Whoopee!" sound different.
- There are a few things Sam says after Darkness says, "Really? Do you like to play Cheese and Crackers?":
- Sam says, "Do I? I played it with a toaster in the park. It's great!" after playing it so, but only after his hand is stamped by the talking Toll Bridge.
- Sam says, "I don't know that one." after refusing to play it after all.
- There are a few things Darkness says:
- After Sam says, "Do I? I played it with a toaster in the park. It's great!", Darkness says, "Oh, good!".
- After Sam says, "I don't know that one.", Darkness says, "Oh, I can show you.".
- Darkness has a few ways of saying, "We need some crackers and some tasty cheese.":
- After Darkness says, "Oh, good!", he says it faster, saying the word "some" three times.
- After Darkness says, "Oh, I can show you.", he says it at a normal speed starting with the word "First".
- After Sam plays Cheese and Crackers in the park, his line will get changed from "I don't know that one." to "Do I? I played it with a toaster in the park. It's great!", Darkness' line will get changed from "Oh, I can show you." to "Oh, good!", and his way of saying "We need some crackers and some tasty cheese!" will change from normal speed to fast speed, which will be kept just the way they are at the end of the game.
- If the knob is missing from the door, the flashlight is in the shack. If it's already on the door, the flashlight is in the mines.
- If Sam talks to King before oiling, he will say, "Here, I think maybe this might help your wheels.", but if not, he won't say it.
- When Sam uses the oil can on the water meter, he says, "Hm.", but only when King faces the left side of the screen.
- When Sam uses the pickax on the water meter, he says, "I might get in trouble.", but only when King faces the left side of the screen.
- Before the tree with the monocle says, "Good day to you, fellow tree.", Sam says, "Errr, tree coming through.", but only after the trees give him an inspection and when Sam has the ingenious disguise in his head as he calls it.
- When Sam leaves the park for the first time, the toll bridge says, "Hold it! If you're planning with coming back, I'll have to stamp your hand.".
- In the real game, Sam helps Otto and then King, but in the demo, he does it vice-versa.
- In Darkness' library, there are three blue books, three red books, three yellow books, and four green books.
- The US dub features marshmallows and the Dutch dub features tomatoes.
- The 1996 version uses purple subtitles by the organ while the 1999 version uses the yellow ones.
- In the ScummVM version, Darkness' Kitchen music, the gold mine music, Beethoven Bust's lyrics, and the organ and trombone notes in his songs are sound effects, including the questions that Wink says and the answers that Sam says, but only while scrolling, which are also sound effects.
- When Sam gets close to Darkness' house for the first time, he gasps and says, "Yup, this is Darkness' house, all right.", but when he leaves, he says, "That's Darkness' house.", even though he didn't say, "That looks like Darkness' house." anymore when he hadn't done it yet.
- The Cheesles look more like the Beatles.
- If the mask is under the chair in the living room, and Sam clicks to stop the furniture and then clicks on the mask, he then says "There's my Pajama Sam mask", pronouncing "pajama" the way they do in the South and East Coast (Adlon is from New York, so she likely slipped into a more natural pronunciation for just this one line. The Western pronunciation works better with the rhyme, Pajama Sam. This is the only line where Adlon doesn't use it.)
Goofs[]
- In the Russian dub, Sam says, "What do you know, another sock!" and "Look, that's my sock!" in English.
