Pajama Sam: Life Is Rough When You Lose Your Stuff! is the fourth and final installment in the Pajama Sam series released along with Putt-Putt: Pep's Birthday Surprise.

Sam's Pajama Man comic book is lost in a strange world, where he meets a soiled sock who needs to get to his other sock, who is clean. He goes on a journey to find a way to clean the soiled sock and to find clothes (a shirt, shoes, and the socks) to get to Grubby Corners Mall, where his comic has found its way to. In this game, Pajama Sam's voice is provided by Elisha Ferguson.

Plot[]

At the end of a Pajama Man TV show, Sam sees a breaking news story. The news tells everyone that Pajama Man is coming live in person where the fans will get to meet him at the mall to get autographs. Sam is really excited to meet him so he went into the laundry room and ask his mom if they can go to the mall. Sam thinks he should find his comic book so he can get Pajama Man to sign it. The comic book suddenly gets pulled into the big pile of junk and Sam must get it back. As Pajama Sam, he's ready to retrieve his comic book and lands into the land of junk. Sam sets off on a series of adventures in search of his lost comic book.

After many adventures, Sam acquires some things he needs to enter a strange mall. The security guard lets him through, and his clothing-related friends leave to explore. Sam searches the mall for Dr. Grime (who he presumes took his comic book), but is mistaken for the doctor by a small crowd. After taking cover in a room, Pajama Sam finds his comic book. In the conclusion of his adventure Sam decides to keep his room tidy so that his stuff would be easier to find. Sam forgets one thing: he needs to meet Pajama Man to sign his comic book before he leaves for the mall.

Gameplay[]

Pajama Sam 4 features gameplay similar to the other Humongous games. It is played almost entirely with the mouse, using a left click to interact with the environment. Sam has an inventory which can be accessed at any time by hovering the mouse at the bottom of the screen. Clicking the computer icon on the left-hand side of the inventory brings up a menu with options to save the game, load a game, quit the game, set up the game paths, or view the credits. The spacebar pauses the game, allowing several more game options. The game is quit by either an option in the pause menu or an option in the inventory menu.

Throughout the game's course, players are challenged with solving puzzles and interacting with characters. Puzzles are solved by using items to manipulate something in the environment. These items are usually found scattered around the game world or are obtained from other characters. All items are accessible through the inventory mentioned above and all have a purpose during the game.

Trivia[]

  • This is the only Pajama Sam game without a demo, possibly because this game was only released after Atari's takeover along with Putt-Putt: Pep's Birthday Surprise.
  • This game is tied with Putt-Putt: Pep's Birthday Surprise as the latest Humongous Entertainment adventure game, being both released on the same day in 2003.
  • Due to the low budgets, Sam is no longer voiced by Pamela Segall Adlon, he's instead voiced by Elisha Ferguson.
  • This game is often called Pajama Sam 4.
  • Due to time constraints, this is the only Pajama Sam game to have two pathways: one with the jar in front of the dresser and the other with the same one in the exterior of the mall.
  • In the Save/Load Screen, the Song button is unlocked after the soiled sock comes in handy.
  • There is unique music composed for the aquarium location.
  • When the two socks unite, a reprise of the infamous Sock Musical would've sung. It was written, but never made it into the final game.
  • Near the end, after Sam gets a Prizewinner Pass, he says, "Oh boy! Just what I wanted." after talking to the hall monitor, but he doesn't say it before.
  • When you're in the dressing room, the drawer game will take you right back outside.
  • The Debris Removal game will make you go back to the spot where you are.
  • This, along with Putt-Putt: Pep's Birthday Surprise, are the only two Junior Adventures to use the YAGA engine.
  • When the Hall Monitor says, "Hey! No touching!", what she means is "Leave that wall alone!".
  • Reactions:
    • This game received a lot of negative feedback from gamers and Humongous enthusiasts. As the game has a low budget and harsh time crunch due to Atari S.A. (the company that was formerly Infogrames)'s interference as well as them not caring about the Junior Adventure games due to their focus on the Backyard Sports games. Common criticisms include Sam's new voice actress, low quality animation and de-synchronized lip movements, near-lack of multiple pathways and the story having a weak plot compared to the other games, being a pseudo-rehash of the earlier Pajama Sam's Lost and Found. As a result, and despite the team's best intentions to polish the game as best as they could, this is the first time the reviews are mixed in a Humongous game. Second time it was Putt-Putt: Pep's Birthday Surprise, as Humongous went into financial trouble after they (and Atari) released the game and the company was shut down later in 2005.
  • Unused Content:
    • All information shown comes from the game's debug room and game files. Due to Atari's harsh crunch on Humongous while developing the game, lots of pathways, locations and music never made the final cut.
    • Pathways:
      • Perhaps the biggest and most notable unused pathway is that there was originally a pathway where instead of Grandma Sweater knitting Sam a shirt with yarn, she lost her contact lenses and Sam has to bring it back to her. Unused dialogue on the sam folder indicates that he has to use a balloon to get it back. Due to the time crunch, it was left unused.
      • While the peanut can be always found on the vista in normal gameplay, the peanut would've also been found on the dust bunny coral.
    • Locations:
      • There was gonna be an area inside the aquarium. A background of this is found on the game files. In addition, a lampcord area would've linked the aquarium, which Sam has to get there by going off the cliff where the fireflies are. In normal gameplay, he goes into the aquarium instead.
      • There was going to be a sidetable area, which mentions a Roman solider. While concept art of the solider was made, it never made the final game.
      • The debug map hints a separate area for the chess bleachers location.
