Putt-Putt Travels Through Time is a point-and-click adventure game developed by Humongous Entertainment in 1997. It is the fourth game in the Putt-Putt series. Infogrames later re-packaged this game in a bundle with Putt-Putt and Pep's Balloon-O-Rama in 1999. On August 14, 2012, it was ported to iOS by Nimbus Games, Inc. A Lite (demo) version was released a week later.

In this game, Putt-Putt must travel through time to retrieve his calculator, lunchbox, history report/essay, and Pep. He travels through four time periods: the Age of the Dinosaurs, the Medieval Times, the Old West, and the Future. It is also the last game to feature Jason Ellefson as the voice of Putt-Putt.

Plot[]

The game begins with Putt-Putt packing Pep and his new school supplies. Putt-Putt is excited to show Mr. Firebird his history report/essay, calculator, and Smokey/Bernie the Fire Engine lunchbox, along with Pep, before school starts. He wakes up Pep, brings his coin, and heads down the road to Mr. Firebird's lab. He explains about his new Time Portal invention, which allows the past and future to be seen without actually traveling there. After Putt-Putt takes out his things, Mr. Firebird attempts to start the machine. After failing, he realizes he needs a coin to start the machine, and he is fresh out. Putt-Putt offers the coin, and Mr. Firebird starts the machine, stating it provides the perfect ratio between three things: the inverted sub-space bubble frequency, the molecular torque, and the spin cycle.

However, the Time Portal goes out of control and opens up. It sucks Putt-Putt's items for school and Pep into time, landing in one of four places. A panicked Mr. Firebird tells Putt-Putt of the risk of being sucked into time unless the portal is closed for good. Putt-Putt assures him that he will gather his things and Pep soon, and enters the Time Portal. Putt-Putt must retrieve his lost things and his lost dog Pep in order for Mr. Firebird to close the portal for good.

In the end, Putt-Putt returns to the present with all his things and Pep being rescued. Mr. Firebird successfully closes the portal for good. Putt-Putt tells Mr. Firebird that he liked time traveling. Mr. Firebird is glad that Putt-Putt had so much fun while time traveling, but tells Putt-Putt that he's going to be late for school unless he hurries. At school, Putt-Putt shares his experiences.

Gameplay[]

Putt-Putt Travel Through Time, like other Humongous Entertainment games, is a point-and-click adventure game. The player takes control of Putt-Putt with the goal of rescuing Pep and his lost school supplies and having fun along the way. The game is played by using the mouse to interact with the environment. By clicking on various areas called click points, the player can collect items, talk with other characters, and watch funny animations. Items are collected to help the player solve puzzles. The game contains four different areas to explore: the Age of the Dinosaurs, the Medieval Times, the Old West, and the Future. These areas are joined in the middle by the Time Portal and Cartown.

Each one of Putt-Putt's items and Pep have four possible locations, one in each era in time.

  • Pep: Can appear in the Pterodactyl's nest (Mesozoic Era), on top of a castle wall (Middle Ages), in the desert (American Frontier), or in the Fun Zone (Distant Future).
  • Lunchbox: Can appear at the top of a hill, blocked by thorny plants, making a tunnel (Mesozoic Era), held by Sir Blaze (Middle Ages), used by Silverado Sam (American Frontier), or in the museum's food storage display (Distant Future).
  • Calculator: Can appear on top of a ledge (Mesozoic Era), used by Merlin (Middle Ages), on top of a building then dropped into a trunk (American Frontier), or in the museum's mathematics display (Distant Future).
  • History Report: Can appear under the foot of a Triceratops (Mesozoic Era), in King Chariot's hand (Middle Ages), in the General Store used as a missing poster (American Frontier), or in the museum's writing display (Distant Future).

That's a total of sixteen individual paths, the highest of any Junior Adventure. Each era can only have one item in it. Thus, the total number of games is 4! = 4*3*2*1 = 24. This is the second to Freddi Fish 2: The Case of the Haunted Schoolhouse (56).

Trivia[]

  • A book adaptation, Putt-Putt: Lost in Time, was based on this game and released in 2001.
  • At a point this game came with a free activity book but the book has not been scanned.
  • This game along with Freddi Fish 3: The Case of the Stolen Conch Shell are the first Humongous Entertainment games to be ported onto the Nintendo Switch.
  • After Pep is rescued in any of the four locations, trumpets play and Putt-Putt's victory theme for rescuing him plays in any style.
  • When puffs of smoke in lines appear out of the portal in the beginning, it means that Putt-Putt's items and Pep are gone.
  • Clicking on Merlin will make Putt-Putt say, "Hello! I'm...", but clicking on the gold machine (or the abacus in the Future Calculator storyline) will make him say, "Excuse me. I'm..." instead.
  • After Pep is rescued in any other location than the Mesozoic Era, Putt-Putt says, "Here we go, Pep!" after saying, "Now I'm off to explore the Age of the Dinosaurs!".
  • In the demo, Virgil Clyde sings two songs, "Out, Out in the World" and "Welcome to My Home" to the tune of "Home on the Range", standing up, and not moving, but in the real game, Virgil Clyde sings all three songs to the tune of "Home on the Range", dancing and moving.
  • The default stone that Merlin uses to turn into non-consumable gold in other storylines is Blue Lapis.
  • When the rope or firewood takes the spot of the history report/essay in the American Frontier, it's smaller, not bigger.
  • When Mr. Firebird says, "...the molecular torque, and the spin cycle!", Putt-Putt appears with a toothy grin, but when you press the period key during Mr. Firebird's dialogue, the animation is skipped.
  • This is the second and last Putt-Putt game in which Smokey/Bernie does not appear in-person, and the only game in which he appears without a beard and gray colored accents.
  • In the beginning, when Pep sleeps, Putt-Putt says his pet's name twice.
  • In the US dub, a panicked Mr. Firebird says, "Holy gas can!", but in the UK dub, he says, "Holy petrol pump!" instead.
  • In the US dub, a panicked Mr. Firebird says, "My calculations show that until everything is brought back to the present time...", but in the UK dub, he doesn't say the word "the" while saying it.
  • In the US dub, a panicked Mr. Firebird says, "You be careful, Putt-Putt. AND GOOD LUCK!", but in the UK dub, he says it in a happy voice.
  • When Putt-Putt enters the portal for the first time, Mr. Firebird says, "You be careful, Putt-Putt. AND GOOD LUCK!", making him change his expression from panicked back to happy.
  • The items that are not mentioned in the song called "The Time Continuum" are the calculator and the lunchbox.
  • When Putt-Putt says, "Here we go, Pep!" in the Age of the Dinosaurs, it means he already rescued him first, second, or third, but not last because the game will end.
  • The Medieval Times has the least number of music themes (with three), the Old West has four themes, and the Age of the Dinosaurs and the Future have the most (with five).
  • In the US, UK, and Dutch dubs, Putt-Putt says, "I did it!" twice in the end, but in the French and Russian dubs, he only says it once.
  • Time Portal music plays in the Age of the Dinosaurs (except in the Pterodactyl's nest) when the path is clear.
